Cheap Flights to India | Cheapest Months to Fly to India
Find Cheap Flights to India from Australia
Most travellers heading to India leave from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide. Air India flies nonstop from Sydney and Melbourne to Delhi, and Qantas operates a nonstop Sydney to Bengaluru service. Every other city pair goes through a hub: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Dubai, Doha or Colombo.
Here’s the part people miss. When we price cheap flights to India, the nonstop is faster but rarely the cheapest option on the day. On most dates the lower fares sit with the one-stop carriers, and that gap widens as you get closer to peak season. If your budget matters more than your arrival time, it’s worth pricing both before you book.
Departure city matters too. Perth often prices lower to Delhi and Mumbai than the east coast does, because it’s a shorter sector with more competition through the Gulf.
Cheapest Months to Fly to India
Quick answer: February, March, April and May are usually the cheapest months to fly to India from Australia. July and August are cheaper again, but that’s the middle of the monsoon. Mid-November to mid-January is the most expensive stretch of the year, by a wide margin.
Cheapest Months to Fly to India: February to May
Once the Christmas rush clears in late January, fares drop away quickly. February through to May is the quietest stretch on this route, and it’s when we see the best economy pricing all year.
April and May are cheap for a reason. Northern India gets seriously hot, and 44 or 45 degrees in Delhi is normal by mid-May. If you’re visiting family and the heat doesn’t bother you, that’s where the savings live. Southern cities like Kochi and Bengaluru handle those months better.
Late June through August brings monsoon pricing, which is lower again. Rain doesn’t usually cancel flights, but it does mean shorter days out and slower road travel once you land.
Cheapest Time to Visit India
The cheapest time to visit India and the best time to visit India aren’t quite the same thing. The weather is at its most comfortable from late October through to March, which is also when demand peaks.
Our pick for the sweet spot is late September into early October. The monsoon has eased across most of the north, the Diwali rush hasn’t started, and fares are still sitting at shoulder season levels. February is the other one worth holding out for, especially for Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle.
Peak Months for Flights to India
Mid-November to mid-January is the peak, and it isn’t close. Australian school holidays, Indian wedding season and Christmas all land in the same window, and seats on the popular routes sell out months ahead.
The Diwali fortnight (late October or November, depending on the year) is the other spike. Fares can jump 40 to 60 per cent in the two weeks either side of it. Easter causes a smaller bump on Australian departures.
How to Find the Cheapest Flights to India
- Book December and January travel by July or August. Prices on this route climb steadily from about ten weeks out, and there is no late discounting over Christmas.
- Move your dates by three or four days. Departing on 3 December instead of 20 December can save several hundred dollars per person.
- Price the one-stop options against the nonstop before you decide. A six-hour Singapore or Kuala Lumpur connection often costs a lot less.
- Check the secondary airport. Amritsar or Chandigarh instead of Delhi, or Ahmedabad instead of Mumbai, can be cheaper once you factor in the domestic sector you'd otherwise buy.
- Read the baggage allowance before you compare fares. A cheaper ticket with 20kg is not cheaper than a slightly dearer one with 2 x 23kg, once you've paid for the excess.
- Book the return in one booking. Two separate one-way tickets out of Australia almost always price higher.
- Ask about consolidator and group fares. A lot of the pricing agents hold on India routes never appears on public search sites.
Cheapest Days to Fly to India
Tuesday and Wednesday departures are usually the cheapest days to fly to India, with Thursday not far behind. Friday and Sunday are the ones to avoid, since they carry both leisure and business demand.
One myth worth putting down: the day you book doesn’t matter much. Airlines repriced dynamically years ago, so “book on a Tuesday” advice is well out of date. The day you fly still counts.
Popular Indian Destinations from Australia
- Delhi (DEL) — the main gateway for the north, and the easiest connection point for Amritsar, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Dehradun.
- Amritsar (ATQ) — heavily requested by Punjabi families. Usually one stop plus a domestic sector, occasionally direct from the Gulf.
- Mumbai (BOM) — best served through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Dubai and Colombo.
- Ahmedabad (AMD) — strong Gujarati demand from Melbourne and Sydney, and often cheaper than Mumbai.
- Hyderabad (HYD) and Bengaluru (BLR) — the busiest southern business routes, with good one-stop options.
- Chennai (MAA), Kochi (COK) and Kolkata (CCU) — usually via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo or Bangkok.
Why Book Your Flight to India with Sai World Travel?
We’re a Brisbane travel agency based at Nundah, with consultants taking calls from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth as well. Most of the people we book cheap flights to India for aren’t tourists. They’re going home to see parents, attend a wedding, or sort out a family matter, often at short notice.
That changes what good service looks like. It means holding a fare while a visa comes through, rebooking when a funeral date shifts, and arranging wheelchair assistance and special meals for elderly parents flying on their own. We also handle Indian visa applications, OCI cards and passport renewals in house, so one team can manage the whole trip instead of three.

For December and January travel, book five to six months ahead. For February to October, eight to twelve weeks is usually enough to get a fair fare. Last-minute pricing on India routes rarely improves, because the seats fill with visiting-family traffic that books early.
Tuesday and Wednesday are generally the cheapest days to fly to India, with Thursday close behind. Friday and Sunday departures are the most expensive. Shifting your departure by a couple of days often saves more than switching airlines does.
Yes. Cheap flights to India are easiest to find in the off-season, roughly April to early September, when fares run consistently below peak season pricing.
