For most families the Air India nonstop is the first choice. It avoids a transit airport, which matters for anyone who does not speak much English or is nervous about finding a connecting gate. The trade-off is that it can fill up fast in December and January and around Diwali, and it is not always the cheapest option.

One-stop routings to Sydney are plentiful. Depending on season, options typically include Singapore Airlines or Scoot through Singapore, Malaysia Airlines or Batik Air through Kuala Lumpur, Cathay Pacific through Hong Kong, and Emirates, Qatar Airways or Etihad through the Gulf. Some of these carriers have generous baggage allowances, which can matter more than the fare when a traveller is bringing gifts for the family.

Most international flights leave from Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International. Check the ticket, because terminals can change. Airlines generally advise arriving about three hours before an international departure, and Delhi's queues for security and emigration can be long at night when many long-haul flights leave.

At check-in, airline staff will ask for the passport and check the Australian visa electronically. It is worth the traveller carrying a printed copy of the visa grant anyway. Bags over the allowance are charged at the airport, often at a higher rate than pre-purchased extra baggage, so tell us early if extra weight is likely.

We see many first-time international flyers on this route, often a mother or father visiting a new grandchild in Sydney. What we usually arrange:

• Wheelchair assistance. Staff take the passenger from check-in to the aircraft in Delhi, and from the aircraft through immigration and baggage collection in Sydney. Request it at booking.
• Meet-and-assist in Delhi. A paid service where an attendant helps with check-in, security and emigration. Useful for travellers who do not need a wheelchair but want a guide.
• Special meals. Hindu vegetarian, Asian vegetarian, Jain and diabetic meals are available on many airlines if requested in advance.

Medication should go in the cabin bag with a copy of the prescription. A short note in English and Hindi with the Sydney address and a family phone number also helps if the traveller needs to ask for directions.

Indian citizens need a valid Australian visa before boarding. Parents visiting family usually hold the Visitor visa (subclass 600). Students and migrants will already have their own visa type, and Australian citizens returning home need only their Australian passport.

International flights arrive at Terminal 1. After immigration, passengers collect bags and go through biosecurity screening before walking out into the arrivals hall. Family waiting outside should allow extra time after touchdown, since queues and bag checks can take a while after a busy morning arrival.

Sydney Airport is close to the city, about 8 kilometres south, and the train from the international station reaches Central in minutes. For an older parent with luggage, though, being collected by car is usually easier.

Every arriving passenger fills in an Incoming Passenger Card, and the food question is the one that trips people up. Answer yes if carrying any food at all, including packaged snacks, spices, tea or sweets. Officers inspect declared items and release those that are allowed. Seeds, fresh produce and some dairy and meat products are commonly refused. Penalties apply to undeclared items, so declaring is always the right call.

Some relatives land in Sydney and fly on to Canberra, Newcastle or elsewhere. Sydney's domestic terminals are separate from the international terminal, linked by train and transfer bus, so allow a good buffer if the domestic flight is on a separate ticket. Students and new migrants arriving in Sydney have different priorities from visiting parents. A one-way fare is common, the checked baggage allowance often decides the airline, and a date that can be moved without a large fee is useful when an enrolment or job start is not fixed.
