Melbourne's Gujarati community has grown a great deal, and Ahmedabad is the main airport for the state. Weddings are a big driver. Gujarati weddings tend to cluster in the cooler months from November to February, and whole families often travel together, which makes early booking important if you need several seats on the same flight.

We also book a lot of one-way tickets on this route for parents who come to Melbourne for several months to help with a new baby, then fly home in time for Navratri or Diwali. If that is your plan, it is worth thinking about the return date early, because the weeks before the big Gujarati festivals are when prices into Ahmedabad climb fastest.

Depending on the season, common ways to reach Ahmedabad from Tullamarine include:

The Delhi and Mumbai options can look cheaper on paper, but check how the connection works. If the domestic flight leaves from a different terminal, or is on a separate ticket, you may need to collect your bags and check in again. For a family with several large suitcases, that can turn a short layover into a stressful one. We point this out on every quote so you can compare like with like.

Navratri, usually in September or October, is when many Gujarati families most want to be home for nine nights of garba. Diwali and the Gujarati new year follow shortly after, so October and November can be expensive on every route into Gujarat.

Uttarayan, the kite festival on 14 January, falls in the middle of the Australian summer holidays. That combination makes the first half of January one of the busiest windows we see for Ahmedabad bookings.

Visitors who have a week or two to spare often add a trip around the state. The Rann Utsav in the white desert of Kutch runs in the cooler months, roughly November to February, and is reached via Bhuj. The Statue of Unity near Kevadia is a popular day out from Vadodara. Gir National Park, home to the Asiatic lion, and the temples at Somnath and Dwarka draw families on pilgrimage and holiday alike.

Ahmedabad's walled old city, which UNESCO lists as a World Heritage City, and the Sabarmati Ashram are both worth half a day if you are staying in town. We can add domestic flights or an India tour package to your trip.

The airport is in the north of the city, fairly close to the centre by Indian standards, and also convenient for Gandhinagar. Prepaid taxis and app-based cabs are available from arrivals.

Getting to the rest of Gujarat

Vadodara and Anand are an easy drive on the expressway. For Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar or Bhuj, families often travel by road or train, though some towns also have domestic flights from Mumbai. If your family is closer to Surat or Vadodara, we can check whether flying into another airport saves time overall.

• Watch the baggage rules on split tickets. If your domestic flight is booked separately, the allowance may be smaller and you may need to recheck bags. Booking it all on one ticket where possible avoids that.
• Plan for elderly parents. We can request wheelchair assistance throughout, which is especially useful when a connection involves changing terminals in Delhi or Mumbai.
• Coming back with food. Snacks, sweets and spices from Gujarat are common in luggage. Declare them on arrival in Melbourne under Australian biosecurity rules.
• Check transit rules. Some hubs need a transit visa for certain passports, and we point this out when we quote.

Gujarat gets very hot from April to June, and temperatures in Ahmedabad regularly climb above 40 degrees. The monsoon follows from about July to September. For most visitors from Melbourne, November to February is the most comfortable period, which is also why it is the busiest.

If you need to travel in the Victorian July school holidays, expect humid, rainy weather. Family visits work fine then, but outdoor sightseeing is harder.
