For Sydney's Bengali community, Durga Puja is the trip of the year. Flights to Kolkata through Southeast Asia leave Sydney at different times of day, and the choice has a real effect on how the trip feels. A morning or midday departure usually means an afternoon or evening connection and a late arrival at CCU. An evening departure can mean an overnight flight to the hub and a daytime arrival in Kolkata, which suits some families better, especially when relatives are driving in from outside the city.

If you're travelling from Sydney's west, remember to factor in the drive or train to Kingsford Smith. Leaving Parramatta in the afternoon peak can take much longer than expected. We can suggest options that avoid the worst of it when you tell us where you're coming from.

Kolkata's airport is at Dum Dum in the north-east of the city. Depending on traffic, getting to central Kolkata or Salt Lake takes around 30 minutes to an hour or more, and southern suburbs take longer. Pre-paid taxis, the yellow cabs and app-based rides are all available.

The airport uses an integrated terminal for domestic and international flights, which makes onward connections within India fairly straightforward. Many Southeast Asian flights land in the evening or late at night.

Quite a few of our Sydney customers use Kolkata as a stepping stone. For Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim, the usual route is a domestic flight to Bagdogra (IXB) and then a drive into the hills. Kolkata's monsoon runs roughly from June to September and brings heavy rain and occasional waterlogging in the city. Summers before the monsoon are hot and humid. The months from November to February are the most comfortable, which is partly why they are also the busiest. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal occasionally disrupt flights in the transition seasons, so keep some slack in your plans if you're travelling then.

Anyone travelling on an Australian passport needs an Indian visa, typically an e-Visa, unless they hold OCI. Indian passport holders just need enough passport validity.
