Other busy times include Dasara and Diwali in October and November, Ugadi (the Telugu new year) in March or April, and the wedding season in the cooler months. If you have some flexibility, travelling in late February or early March can be easier on the budget.

Options typically include Singapore Airlines or Scoot via Singapore, Malaysia Airlines or Batik Air via Kuala Lumpur, and Emirates, Qatar Airways or Etihad via the Gulf. On some dates a connection via Delhi on Air India, followed by a domestic flight, is worth comparing.

When comparing, look beyond the headline fare. A cheaper Kuala Lumpur connection with a nine-hour wait may not be the saving it looks like once you add airport meals and the extra tiredness at the other end. If you are studying in Melbourne, a few things are worth planning for. Book the return date with enough buffer before your semester starts, since flights back to Australia in late February are busy with other students doing the same thing. A fare with flexible date changes can cost a little more but often pays for itself if your exam timetable or placement shifts.
