Flights from Brisbane to Mumbai

A typical booking has two long sectors. The first leaves Brisbane's international terminal for the hub, and the second carries you across to Mumbai. With a single ticket, your bags go straight through to BOM and you only clear immigration once you land in India.

Overnight departures are common on this route, which means you often land in Mumbai in the late evening or the early hours. If you are being collected, pass your arrival time to family as soon as you have it, because Mumbai traffic makes a quick airport run hard to arrange at short notice.

Timing matters more for Mumbai than for many Indian cities. The monsoon usually arrives in June and lasts into September, bringing heavy rain that can flood roads and occasionally delay flights. Many Brisbane families still travel then because fares can be lower, but it pays to allow extra time on arrival day.

Ganesh Chaturthi, usually in August or September, is the city's biggest festival and draws a lot of visitors home. Diwali in October or November is another peak. From a Queensland point of view the heaviest demand is over the Christmas and January school holidays, when the drier, cooler weather in Mumbai also suits a longer stay. Mumbai is well served from almost every major hub, so there is usually a real choice. Options typically include:

• Thai Airways through Bangkok, depending on whether it is flying from Brisbane in your season

Some travellers also fly Brisbane to Sydney or Melbourne and connect onto an Air India service to Delhi, then a domestic flight to Mumbai. Mumbai's main airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM), in the northern suburbs near Andheri and Santacruz. International flights use Terminal 2. From there, a trip to South Mumbai can take well over an hour in traffic, while suburbs such as Bandra, Andheri or Powai are closer.

Use the prepaid taxi counters or an app-based ride after you exit. If you are connecting onto a domestic flight, check whether it leaves from the same terminal, and leave generous time as transfers here can be slow at peak hours.

Many of the people we book are heading beyond the city. Pune is a common final destination and is usually reached by road or train rather than a second flight. Goa, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur are reachable on domestic flights from Mumbai with Air India or IndiGo, and a through ticket can often include the domestic sector.
