Flights from Delhi to Brisbane

Brisbane has no nonstop service to India at present. That is not a disadvantage if the connection is well chosen. A good layover is long enough to make the transfer comfortably and short enough that the traveller is not stuck in an airport for half a day.

Options typically include:

• Singapore Airlines or Scoot via Singapore
• Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air or AirAsia X via Kuala Lumpur
• Thai via Bangkok
• Emirates, Qatar Airways or Etihad via the Gulf, depending on season
• Air India nonstop to Sydney or Melbourne, then a domestic flight north

Which carriers fly which days changes through the year, so we look at live availability for your dates rather than assuming.

For a parent travelling alone, the connection matters more than saving a small amount on the fare. From experience, these are the things we weigh up:

• Layover length. Two to four hours is usually comfortable with wheelchair help. Under 90 minutes can be stressful, while an overnight wait is tiring.
• Single ticket or separate tickets. On one ticket, bags are normally checked through and the airline looks after missed connections. Separate tickets put that risk on the passenger.
• Transit rules at the hub. Some hubs have transit visa rules for Indian passport holders, especially if the connection involves leaving the airport or changing terminals. We check this before ticketing.
• Connecting through Sydney or Melbourne. The passenger clears Australian immigration and biosecurity at the first Australian airport, then continues on a domestic flight to Brisbane. This can be simple for confident travellers and tiring for a first-time flyer.

We need the traveller's passport details, and we confirm the name spelling carefully because a mismatch with the passport causes problems at check-in.

Tell us who is travelling and why. A parent coming for a grandchild's birth may want an open-ended stay within their visa, while a relative coming for a wedding has fixed dates. That affects whether a return fare, a one-way fare or a flexible fare is the better buy.

You pay in Australian dollars and we email the e-ticket to you and to the traveller in India. If you want the ticket to cover a return to Delhi as well, we can book it as a return and explain the change fees so you know the cost of moving dates later.

An Indian passport holder cannot board a flight to Brisbane without an Australian visa. Parents visiting family normally apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600). Airline staff in Delhi check visa status at check-in.

Because processing times vary, we often suggest waiting for the grant before locking in a cheap non-refundable fare, or picking a fare with fair change conditions. Brisbane's international terminal is separate from the domestic terminal, with the Airtrain and a transfer bus linking the two. If the traveller came through an Asian or Gulf hub, they arrive at the international terminal and complete immigration, baggage collection and biosecurity there.

If they came via Sydney or Melbourne, they will have already cleared immigration and customs, and they arrive at the domestic terminal instead. Families sometimes wait at the wrong terminal, so check the arriving flight number and terminal before driving out. The airport is about 15 to 20 minutes' drive from Nundah and the northern suburbs, outside peak traffic.

Parents almost always pack something from home. Mithai, namkeen, masalas and homemade pickles are the usual items we hear about. Everything edible should be declared on the Incoming Passenger Card. Biosecurity officers then decide what can come in. Seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables, and some dairy and meat products are commonly restricted.

Declaring does not mean the food will be taken, and it avoids the fines that can apply to undeclared goods. Tell your parents to keep food in one bag if possible, which makes inspection quicker.

Brisbane's mild winter from June to August appeals to many parents escaping the Delhi heat in May and June. The summer months are hot and humid, with storms, which some older visitors find tiring. December and January are the busiest months for India travel generally, so book early for those.

Is there a nonstop flight from Delhi to Brisbane?

No. All Delhi to Brisbane itineraries currently connect, either at an overseas hub or at Sydney or Melbourne.

How long does a Delhi to Brisbane flight take?

Most one-stop itineraries take between 15 and 22 hours in total, including the layover. A short, well-timed layover keeps it at the lower end.

Which Brisbane terminal will my parents arrive at?

It depends on the routing. Via an overseas hub they land at the international terminal, and via Sydney or Melbourne they usually arrive at the domestic terminal.

Can you book a wheelchair for my father through the connection?
