Flights from Sydney to Delhi

When the Air India nonstop is operating on your dates, it is the fastest way to reach Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). It is especially good for elderly parents, people who don't sleep well on planes and anyone short on leave. The trade-off is that it is a single airline with limited departures, so at peak times it can be full or priced higher than connecting flights.

One-stop alternatives include:

International departures from Sydney use Terminal 1, which is a separate building from the domestic terminals. If you're connecting from a domestic flight into Sydney, allow plenty of time to transfer between terminals. From the city and much of western Sydney, the airport train line is a practical alternative to parking for three or four weeks.

Many of our Sydney customers live around Parramatta, Harris Park and the wider west, and a common question is how early to leave home. For a long-haul India flight with checked bags, arriving at T1 around three hours before departure is a sensible habit.

Twelve or thirteen hours in one seat is manageable with a little preparation. On the nonstop, choosing an aisle seat helps older travellers who need to get up often, and requesting a special meal (vegetarian, Jain or diabetic, for example) at booking time is worth doing because airlines usually need notice. For people who would rather break the trip up, a connection in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur splits it into an eight-hour-ish leg and a shorter one, with a chance to walk around in between. Some of our Sydney customers deliberately choose that for elderly parents even when the nonstop is available. There is no single right answer. It comes down to the passenger, the price difference and how the timings fall.

Delhi and the surrounding states see a heavy wedding season between roughly November and February, and it overlaps with Diwali and the Australian summer holidays. That combination makes December and January the hardest months to find good fares from Sydney. If you have an invitation for a family wedding, book as soon as the date is fixed. Holi in March is another popular time to visit.

Winter also brings dense fog to north India, mainly in December and January. Fog can delay or divert flights into Delhi, particularly early in the morning. When you have a tight onward train or domestic flight, leave a generous gap.

International flights arrive at Terminal 3. If you are continuing on a domestic flight, check which terminal it leaves from, because Delhi's domestic operations are split across terminals and a transfer between them takes time. On a single ticket the airline will guide you; on separate tickets you will need to collect bags and move yourself.

The Airport Express metro line runs from T3 towards central Delhi, and pre-paid taxis and app cabs are available outside. Gurugram and Noida are both reachable by road, though traffic in the evening peak can be slow.

Delhi is where many Sydney travellers start a wider trip. Agra and Jaipur are the usual sightseeing loop, and Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh are all within a few hours by road or rail. Almost everyone flying to Delhi for a wedding or a long family stay packs heavy. Baggage allowances vary a lot between airlines and fare types, and a cheaper fare with a small allowance can end up costing more once excess baggage is added.
