Flights from Brisbane to Delhi

Brisbane has never had a regular nonstop service to India. That means the real decision is not whether to connect but where. From BNE the international terminal handles the Asian and Gulf carriers directly, so a one-stop itinerary lets you check your bags in Brisbane and collect them in Delhi.

The alternative is to start with a domestic flight south. Air India has operated nonstop flights from both Sydney and Melbourne to Delhi, and those can suit travellers who prefer one long sector on an Indian carrier. Schedules change from season to season, so ask us what is flying on your dates before you settle on a plan.

Fares move a lot between these options, and the cheapest one in March is often not the cheapest in December. Options typically include:

• Via Singapore on Singapore Airlines, or Scoot for travellers who are happy to pay for extras such as bags and meals separately.
• Via Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines, with other carriers such as Batik Air offering Delhi connections from KL depending on season.
• Via Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific.
• Via Dubai or Doha on Emirates or Qatar Airways. These add some distance because the Gulf sits west of India, but the connections are frequent.
• Via Sydney or Melbourne on a domestic flight, then Air India nonstop to Delhi when operating.

We will usually show you two or three of these side by side with the layover times, so you can weigh price against total travel time.

Flying Brisbane to Sydney or Melbourne and then on to Delhi can look simple on a map. The detail that catches people out is the ticket. If both flights are on one booking, your bags are normally checked through and the airline has to look after you if the domestic flight runs late. If they are two separate tickets, you collect your luggage, move from the domestic to the international terminal yourself, and check in again. A delay on the first flight can cost you the second.

We prefer to book these as a single itinerary wherever the fare allows it, and we build in enough time on the ground. Brisbane afternoon storms in summer do delay domestic departures now and then, which is another reason not to cut the connection fine.

Demand from Queensland peaks around the long summer school holidays in December and January, which also lines up with North Indian wedding season. Diwali (October or November, depending on the lunar calendar) and Holi in March bring their own rush. For those dates we suggest booking several months ahead, as the lower fare classes on the popular connections sell early.

Delhi weather matters too. Late May and June are very hot, often well above 40 degrees. December and January bring dense morning fog that can delay arrivals and departures at DEL, so leave some slack if you have an onward domestic flight on the same day.

Delhi's airport is Indira Gandhi International (DEL), in the south west of the city. International flights generally use Terminal 3, and some domestic flights leave from other terminals, so check which one your onward flight uses. Moving between terminals can take a while at busy times.

If family are meeting you, the arrivals hall is often crowded late at night when many long-haul flights land. Agree a meeting point beforehand. If you are making your own way, use the official prepaid taxi counters or an app-based ride rather than accepting offers inside the terminal.
